The Texas Township Fire Department operates an Explorer Post for young adults, aged 14 to 21, who are interested in the fire and rescue field.
TTFD Explorers should expect to perform all of the daily tasks just as if they were a fire fighter with the exception of directly attacking fires and primary care giver to patients; however they will assist in any other way possible. The typical Explorer will receive an abbreviated version of training following the same standards of probationary fire fighter. The TTFD Explorers train (at the Texas Township Fire Department) on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1300 hrs (1:00 PM), and will include hose operations, pumps, ventilation, SCBA, search and rescue, back boarding, triage, and a yearly physical agility test. Once the Explorer has completed their probationary training they will act in a capacity of support to the fire fighters. This includes running the dispatch center at the Texas Township Fire Department, responding on emergency calls with fire fighters, gathering and setting up equipment on fire scenes, and cleaning and maintaining that equipment. During your time as a TTFD Explorer you will be exposed to the same training, scenes, and high stress levels that fire fighters deal with everyday.
In the past, Explorers have completed a Fire Academy and Medical First Responder classes. They also participate in community activities as a post and with the fire department. If you are between the ages of 14 and 21 and are interested in joining the Explorers, or have any questions on Exploring contact Lieutenant Frank Zlomek at FZlomek@TexasFire.org
