The Charter Township
of Texas is located in the southwest portion of Kalamazoo County
(map) encompassing
36 square miles. There are over 10,000 people who reside within
the township. The school systems are Mattawan,
Portage,
Schoolcraft,
and Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo Valley Community
College is also located within the township. The Township offices
are located west of Texas Corners (8th and Q Avenue), on the north
side of "Q" Avenue approximately 1/2 block. The Fire Department
is also at this location. The main entrance is in the rear of the
building.
Texas Township was formed
from Brady in 1838, and derives its name, doubtless, from the Lone
Star State, which even then began to appear as an important factor
in the history of the American Republic. Adjoining township
organizations in this county are Oshtemo,
on the north; Portage,
on the east; Prairie Ronde, on the south; and Antwerp, in Van Buren
County, is on the west.
The lake surface of
Texas covers approximately 1200 acres. Eagle, Crooked, Pretty,
Pine, Paw Paw, Bass, and Duck are some of the more popular lakes.
The land is diversified
by broad plains and a low range of hills, which extend from north
to south through the central part of the west half, with the eastern
half being comparatively level.
The office is open 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00
p.m. on Fridays. |
