Township Board

Meets Every 2nd & 4th Monday of the Month at 6pm

All Township Board Members are elected and serve for four years.  The terms are not staggered and the election is held the same year as the Presidential election.  All meetings are held at the Township Hall, located at 7110 West Q Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI 49009.

Planning Commission

Meets on the 2nd Tuesday (5pm) & 4th Tuesday (6pm) of the Month

The Planning Commission is made up of six members from the community and one Township Board Member. The Planning Commission receives staff support from the Planning Department. The Planning Commission is responsible for maintaining the Master Land Use Plan, a living document that expresses the community’s vision for the future of Texas Township.

The Zoning Ordinance is the tool to implement the Master Land Use Plan. Accordingly, all land use proposals and rezoning requests are reviewed to ensure consistency with both the Zoning Ordinance and the Master Land Use Plan. Occasionally it is appropriate to amend the Master Land Use Plan to ensure that is still reflects the type of community Texas Township residents enjoy now and/or desire for the future.

Zoning Board of Appeals

Meets on the 4th Wednesday of the Month at 6pm

The basic responsibilities of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) includes: variance requests, site plan review of permitted uses, ordinance interpretation, and appeals of administrative decisions. The ZBA is made up of five members, one of which is a liaison from the Planning Commission.  All meetings are held at the Township Hall, located at 7110 West Q Avenue.

Public Safety Committee

Meets on the 1st Tuesday of the Month at 4:30pm

The purpose of the Texas Township Public Safety Committee is to:

  1. Advise the Township Board of Trustees on operations and recommend policies for Police/Sheriff services, Fire / Rescue services, and Emergency Medical Services.
  2. Review operations and performance standards for Police, Fire / Rescue and EMS services.
  3. Address other public safety issues that may arise within the Township.

The Committee is composed of five members: One Township Board member, one member with emergency medical experience, one member with law enforcement experience, one member with fire service experience, and one citizen at large.

Members are appointed by the Township Board to serve varying terms of service.

The Texas Township Public Safety Committee meets monthly, on the first Tuesday of every month, 4:30pm, at the Township Hall. Special meetings may be called occasionally to discuss time sensitive issues, and will be posted in advance at the Township Hall and online.

Parks & Trails Committee

Meets on the 4th Tuesday of the Month at 5pm

The Park Committee consists of two Township Board members, two Citizen Representatives, and Township Staff.  They oversee the development of the Townships two parks, by responding to public interest and use of the Recreation Plan. Yearly development plans are created and a budget is prepared with monies transferred from the General Fund. There is no direct millage for Park development and maintenance. When a project is identified and estimates are obtained, a recommendation is sent to the Township Board.

Board of Review

Meets Annually in March

The Board of Review meets in March to review the property assessment roll that has been prepared by the Township Assessor, to hear appeals from property owners, and to correct the assessment rolls if necessary.  Appointed by the Township Board, they serve for two (2) years.  The dates listed below provide a total of at least 12 hours during the week of March 9, with at least 3 hours held after 6 p.m. as required by statute.

The tentative multipliers for each class of real property for 2015 are:  Agriculture 1.02083, Commercial .99227, Industrial 1.03542, and Residential 1.03221.

Farmers' Market Committee

Meetings scheduled on a Quarterly Basis

The Farmers’ Market Committee manages the operations of the Texas Township Farmers’ Market, which exists to create a sense of community for Texas Township and surrounding areas, promote local businesses and creates economic development around local food, and raise awareness about the rich and diverse agricultural areas in southwest Michigan. The Committee is made up of members of the community, including representatives from the Board, Planning Commission, DDA and Parks and Recreation Committee, as well as residents and vendors.

Road Committee

The Road Committee Meets on an As-Needed Basis

The road committee reviews and makes recommendations to the township board for road improvements.  They do not hold regular meeting dates. You may contact Supervisor Hinkle for additional information at jhinkle@texastownship.org or Superintendent VanderWiere at julievw@texastownship.org.

Design Review Committee

The Design Review Committee Meets on an As-Needed Basis

The design review consists of members of the Corners Business District, Planner Doug Plachcinski, members of the Planning Commission and Township Board.  The purpose of the committee is to review design plans for new developments within the DDA to ensure conformity for the district.
